Steak N Shake

Had a great breakfast in the COMPLETELY EMPTY new Steak N Shake in Huntsville. I'm really surprised that the place isn't busy. Every time a new one opened in towns I lived in, they did great business. The one in Decatur does good business. But I've got to believe the suck-ass shopping rate at Madison Square and lack of a large sign announcing their presence down in that dip on the mall's perimeter are probably the biggest obstacles. For my H'ville LJ folks, please go by Steak N Shake if you haven't been lately or never tried it. Their b'fasts are good. The steakburgers are yummy, but aren't jumbo, artery-cloggers that are the size of choice of most of the other restaurants in town. My favorite order is the Chili 5-way (chili, spaghetti, cheese, onions, and "sauce").

OH AND THE SHAKES!!! Bliss. Pure, thick, chilled joy in a glass.

Has Madison Square fallen out of favor with the shopping populace? I remember "The Mall" was a ghost town when I was growing up, and the last time I was in Huntsville, the Parkway mall was going the same way.

Madison Square has been redone on the inside several times, but things have been going down hill for a couple of years. Parisians was bought out by Belks, thus closing down one of those anchor stores in the mall. The Food Court is down to 5 or so shops. And a brand new shopping area just opened up just a half mile away in one corner of Research Park (one of those places that's sort of like a mall and mixed-use and Disney World rolled together).

Parkway City was essentially torn down and rebuilt into Parkway Place with a two-level parking deck between the mall and the parkway. It is THE place to go shopping in town.

The Mall is gone. Not entirely true...the Toys R Us and BAM! are all that's standing. The rest was torn down for a Home Depot and Costco.

Recently the old, old Heart of Huntsville Mall was torn down (it was along the Parkway downtown between Governors and Clinton - OH, LBJ Tires was there). The big commerical developer is looking to do a mixed use (primarily shopping and entertainment, though) thing there.

There's a chance of that, but also the two times I've been by at 12:30/1pm for lunch, it is far from full and just a couple of cars in the drive-thru. I think they've got a general lack of promotion and public awareness about the place. Otherwise, how can they manage to have so few customers in that neck of the woods during weekday lunch?
