As of tonight, Nigel will be one month old. Tomorrow will mark the one month mark of one or all of us in the Berry household of being sick. As of this morning...
Me: Throat feeling about 90%. Some coughing.
Nigel: Breathing well thru his nose...at last.
Calvin: Runny nose and coughing again.
JD: Chest congestion and feeling lightheaded.

I think the 4 of us need to be segregated, disinfected, and not allowed to see each other until we are all healthy. Just so sick of being sick. :(

Today will be the first test of the drainage system in the backyard. The swail that runs behind the houses on my street kind of ends on the other side of my neighbor's yard, when it drains into a sewer. Years ago, he put down pipe and leveled his back yard. When we had all the rain a week or two ago, that system had an obvious failure (nothing like looking into your backyard and seeing 1/2 of it under water).

After three days...yep, THREE DAYS...of drying out, I was able to get to the drain. He had done a good job of stacking rock around the drain to filter. I especially liked his creative use of a grate from an old grill. However, there had been no maintenance done and mud had accumulated in the rocks. So I spent a couple of hours digging rocks out of a large block of mud. The end of a drain was finally found. I started clearing out around it and noticed there was a second pipe that was completely covered w/ mud. The area was cleared of all debris and I replaced the rock, the grate, and added a piece of left over gutter grate to help in the filtering. The swail in my backyard has been cleared of leaves, pinestraw, and such. Now I get to spend the next day or so looking in back to see how much (if any) water accumulates. I sure hope it won't be necessary to unearth the pipes again and clean out inside.
