I guess I actually need to start with Wednesday.
There's a local story that had a new development. I was trying to get one of the lawyers that was serving as a court-appointed attorney to one of the defendants. I talk to her about joining us on Thursday morning. Things are all set.
Thursday morning, I can't get her at either of the phone numbers she gave me. I'm furious. After the show, I finally get in touch with her. She tells me that the reason why she didn't answer when I called was because she started receiving death threats on Wednesday afternoon. She received both phone and email threats. I told her that we would still like to talk to her on Friday since she couldn't join us on Thursday. I also said that we would like to talk a little about the threats because it was shameful that she is having to go through this for doing her civic duty. Her response was that she wanted to talk to her husband. I tell her that we would like to have her on, but we are planning to talk about this.
I start getting concerned that she'll back out, so I call the police department to arrange an interview with them in the morning to talk about the death threats. I talk to the assistant police chief that assures me that no complaints have been filed by the lawyer. He's familiar with her and tells me that his dept is the only one that would have jurisdiction over her because she lives and works in their area. He tells me that the only complaint that he's received from her was a few weeks ago from a guy on the West Coast who wrote her a letter. It wasn't a death threat at all but just a guy telling her how ashamed she should be for representing her client because of the details of the alleged crime.
I then call up the lawyer for the other defendant and ask him if he's received any death threats or anything. He tells me that he hasn't and seems surprised when I tell him that the other lawyer has.
So I call the original lawyer back and leave a voicemail telling her that I called the police to verify the threats, but that they didn't know of any. I ask if there was another authority that they reported it to and that we just wanted to have our facts verified for in the morning when we discussed it. I then go home for the afternoon.
At 6:30pm, I get a voicemail from the lawyer's assistant. In it, she says: by the way...what we told you was to be off the record; that they filed a complaint with the police, but didn't want it investigated yet, so they asked the police to deny that the complaint was filed if asked by the media; and the final caveat...her grandmother died today, so for her family to have the additional trauma of knowing of these death threats would be a horrible thing. Then she ends the call with "So, Have a good day." What a great lawyer!!! A counter to each angle I present. I had to play nice and cancel the segment for today.
So, what does that have to do with this morning? It meant that I had a 30 minute segment that I had to come up with...only that I didn't have something planned for the 30 minute segment right after that, so in all reality I had an hour that needed to be filled when I went into work at 4am. Joy. Thanks to the brouhaha over when Bush knew what when about 9/11, I was able to find a ton of news audio to use and calls came flooding in on that.
Yet another Friday that served well as a release of tension so my weekend can be relaxing.
