Esther: Quick Summary
Jun. 6th, 2011 05:00 pmEsther and Ruth are the two books of the Bible named after women. Both books also are short stories (historical novellas?) and have little or no direct mention of God. Esther tells of the origin of the Jewish festival of Purim. Oh, Esther is also the first book of the Bible to actually use the name "Jew" to describe the Israelites.
It is an interesting story with lots of twists and turns where the plans of the antagonist are used against him. There are feasts, edicts to kill all of the Jews, a plot to harm the king is stopped, and Queen Esther is shown as a beautiful woman with some cunning. In the end, she comes out and saves the Jewish people in the land not by having the genocidal decree undone but to allow for the Jews to defend themselves without punishment. As far as story is concerned, this book is currently my favorite of the ones I've read so far.
