475 - Bruce Springsteen - Tunnel of Love
Feb. 25th, 2011 11:40 amIt was impossible to not hear Bruce Springsteen on Top 40 radio in the 80's. I always thought he was okay, but I've never felt compelled to listen to his albums. Tunnel of Love didn't show me anything that I didn't expect. It is filled with songs that I don't dislike, but only one that I would actually say I'd like to hear again.
If you like going to open mic nights at bars, this album is filled with fodder that a person and a guitar could play and make him seem gritty and blue collar. Bruce does some philosophizing, but nothing terribly deep or abstract. Even when discussing loneliness and love, his commentary is practical and down to earth.
Songs I knew I liked: When I looked at the track list, I didn't recognize any of the songs. Upon listening, I recognized "Tunnel of Love" and "Brilliant Disguise." And now that I know the title to the latter, I'll know not to sing the line in the song as "just a bridge in disguise."
Songs I didn't know but now like: None
Songs I can go the rest of my life without hearing again: "Brilliant Disguise" is the only song on the album that I would like to hear again. I wouldn't cringe too much if someone put the album on, but I'm likely to fall asleep or otherwise distract myself.
