Today I found an interview disc (on vinyl) from the release of Skylarking. According to the sheet still tucked inside the sleeve, the album was designed to be played by radio stations. It consists of four segments around 15 minutes long each. Between songs there is Andy weaving anecdotes about each of the songs (recorded at his house).

Todd Rundgren (who produced the album) makes an appearance right before "Dear God." He tells us that Andy brought "Another Satellite" to the sessions after Todd had settled on what tracks would appear. Todd wasn't thrilled with adding the song because he didn't think it fit into the album's concept. But Andy won the day and some undisclosed person with the label decided "Another Satellite" could be added if "Dear God" was removed. I had heard about the circumstances of "Dear God" being added later, but never about it originally being removed.

I also discovered that the reason why I dislike "The Man Who Sailed Around His Soul" was actually Todd's idea. What makes me skip the song half the time is the brass horns and their late 50's/early 60's-style big band jazz sound. That was totally Todd's idea after hearing the demos Andy sent. Andy said the demo was recorded as "Leonard Cohen on a bad day" and was a bit confused by Todd's idea originally but came to love it once he heard it.

What has me the most pleased about the album is that I wasn't expecting all of the songs to be heard in their entirety. I thought I'd just hear bits that may or may not directly correspond to the info Andy was sharing as part of the interview. The producers of this interview disc did a nice job, indeed.

Oooh! Any chance of converting that to an .mp3 to share? :)

(BTW, I agree; TMWSAHS sounds very out of place within the pastoral context of the rest of the songs. I do like it a lot; it just sounds like it belongs on Oranges and Lemons instead.)

I just swapped out PC towers. Either I will need to get my audio I/O board from my old PC installed so I can do the SPDIF connections or I need to see if this PC will connect to the turntable via USB (the old one refused to see the USB connection). Soooo...I will try to convert this over, but it will likely be a little while before I get that done.

It took me a LONG time to like The Man Who Sailed Around His Soul, but as we've discussed before, I'm actually quite fond of it now.

Do you know how much I seethe with envy over your find? Seethe. Really.
