I was turned on to this video by [livejournal.com profile] wc_helmets. I like what the makers have done with the speech. Considering some of the other stuff I saw on YouTube, I think this was treated in a respectful enough way that I would half expect to hear a snippet of this in a single by will.i.am or someone.

"I Have a Dream" Speech Autotuned Remix

Oh, and this whole autotune thing should have stopped with Cher's "Believe."

I remember years ago the producers pawned off the Chere/autotune thing as a vocoder to try to keep the whole thing a secret. The technology is based on a program designed to read seismic activity, which I find strange. As the years of autotune have gone on, I've become rather ambivalent to it. Not that top 40 isn't homogenized, but autotune has a tendency to make everything sound the same. I still find it's fun to play with in subtle doses.

It's like in the late 90's and everybody was jumping on the Drum and Bass style of techno, so we had Bowie doing song's like "I'm Afraid of Americans" or even NIN's "Perfect Drug", which all had this standard drum sound that was all over popular British music. I still like the genre, and some of my favorite electronic artists (Aphex Twin, Squarepusher) really pushed the boundaries of the music, despite its homogenized quality. Good can come from all tools, including destructive weapons like Autotune.

I could do with out the moving mouths inserted on the people standing in the background to make it look like they were singing background vocals. I find that disrespectful. Had that not been in there I would agree with you.
