When I bought my first CD player almost 20 years ago, 3 Feet High and Rising was the first CD I ever purchased. My friend, Kevin, and I just about wore grooves into the disc. LOL! I might have to look for it at CD Source. :)>
That album was so brilliant and fresh when it came out. De la Soul is Dead is also really good in that "let's kill our one hit wonder fan base with a really dark album with no single" kinda way.
There are some really great tracks on De la Soul is Dead. But there is an underlying mood of "Fuck you, we're not hippies!" that is really distracting while I'm trying to groove.
I miss rap groups with such an eclectic use of sampling. One of the reasons I liked earlier Missy Elliot, too. Timbaland is still good, but he's evolved into a formula.
Yea, I remember some track from that album combined "The Game of Love" and some Doors song (I think "Touch Me"). That era of sampling from the late 80's, early 90's is to be missed. Sampling was so free-form and new at the time, and it hadn't yet degenerated into a formula of hook-stealing a la Puff Daddy that eventually plagued the idea of sampling as artistry. Also, copyright law's messed a lot of things up. I remember reading last year that The Record Company that Owns the Rights to Parliament sued The Record Company that Owns the Rights to N.W.A. for an uncredited sound clip N.W.A. used on Straight Outta Compton that is less than one second long and is manipulated almost beyond recognition. TRCTOTRT Parliament won.
Timbaland's degenerated, for sure. Overexposure does that. I hear he's doing the next Duran Duran album, which sounds fabulous for some reason.
Hear-hear on the PDiddy corruption of sampling to pandering to the hook.
I also share an interest on what the Timbaland/DuranDuran combo can produce. It could be very interesting if he's not just phoning it in for Simon, et al.
