I already knew I had a n'bor two doors down from me with the same last name. However, I also found out this weekend that the wife is a registered Republican. Somehow, though, my phone number became attached to this. I had received political phone calls for her before, but I got a call from Fred Thompson's camp this weekend.

I did something I've never done before...I donated money to the campaign. Granted, it's only $25. Of the GOP candidates, Thompson's the one I would prefer (Rudy scares the ever-lovin' shit out of me) so I decided to help his primary prospects. Now, I need to find Obama's AL office and give him $25 before the end of the year.

I'm familiar w/ Fred and his politics from my time in Nashville. While he's got the same conservative talking points as Paul Harvey, he's a pragmatist that tends to act more moderately than he sounds. I met him numerous times for interviews and was always impressed with his lack of airs, cordial attitude, and fights with handlers about him being more blunt/honest than they might care for him to be.

While ideologically I'm in Ron Paul's camp, he's not going to win the GOP nomination...let alone against Hillary or Obama. Fred is the person I trust the most of the bunch. What can I say, the older I get, the more I'm finding that the leadership style and character of a president is probably more important than how far from my views they are (given the power Congress likes to exert no matter the politics of the president).

Now that I've written all the above, I'm pondering if you were questioning why I want to donate to Obama before the end of the year. For safety sake (what the hell does that mean; someone gonna get injured if I don't answer this?), I'll answer it, too. ;)

Since I honestly don't have any strong leanings to one party over the other, I feel a need to be even handed if I'm going to start handing out money. Out of the Democratic field, Obama is who I like best and would like to do what I can to help him get a chance to run in the general election. By that point, I may pick an overall favorite and contribute again to a single candidate.

I intentionally didn't elaborate on the question. Mostly I was being lazy, but I was also wondering which of those questions would pop to the front of your mind first. Hmmm, typing that it looks like a bit of a mind game. Sorry about that. Not what I intended. Of course, my thorough friend, you managed to cover all the bases dispite my late night silliness.

And as a reward for your toying with my mind, I have around 10 empty ink cartridges for your boys, if they still collect. Also, I realized last night that I do still have the Doctor Who Movie on my computer and can put that on DVD, if you want. We could meet for lunch tomorrow or Friday for you to accept these tokens of my appreciation.

Yes, they do. Yes, I want.

But. . . We've a working lunch scheduled tomorrow and I've plans for Friday. Alternatives are: Late, late breakfast Saturday. The boys have football games at 8 and 10 on the same fields on which they played soccer. Or lunch next week on the day of your choice.

Lemme know!
