I am desperate for an art gallery weekend in Atlanta or D.C. If work keeps up or even goes up, I think there is a strong chance of my taking our tax refund next year towards flying up to D.C. for a couple of days with Calvin (and maybe Nigel). While I know that trip will focus more on the Air & Space Museum and Natural History, I hope to coax the boys into letting me spend a few minutes looking at the modern art at the Hirshhorn. I'm probably less than a decade away from any hope of doing the National Art Gallery...even less if Calvin's interest in art keeps going.

Once I recover from surgery, I hope to get the family in the habit of monthly day-trips out of town. The boys are becoming patient enough to travel to our surrounding regional cities (Chattanooga, Atlanta, B'ham, Nashville) but we will still have to keep the excitement level of what we see at the destinations up if I don't want the boys to lose interest in this hobby. I even hope that JD will allow me to take the boys away for a day a month after Monkey comes along.

At least once a month, I used to take day trips to neighboring cities just to shop around a bit and look around at things. I'm finding that I do that far less frequently because of the price of gas, plus having more to do around here. Spring 2005 was the last time that gas was at a level that didn't hamper driving. When it takes $50 to fill up my tank compared to the $25 or $30 that it used to take not that long ago, it has definitely changed my habits. I typically have to fill up a vehicle once a week from driving locally for my daily habits. That's $200 a month compared to $100 to $120. A single day trip adds $50 to that instead of the $25 or $30 that it used to, and it makes a difference.

Huh, I wondered what Robert Maplethorpe's bedroom would look like. There it is. Sort of "Piss Martha Stuart."
