csberry: (normal completely different)
I finished Leviticus yesterday and I've become more convinced than ever that no one should pull quotes out of this book when discussing what is sinful. You can't pick and choose what in Leviticus you feel is a sin and what isn't; either you choose to obey all of it (no rare bloody steaks, bye-bye bacon, and buy a large share in a farm for all of that animal sacrifice) or you just ignore the rules and be grateful for the New Covenant.

I have never hated a grocery chain like I do Kroger here in Huntsville.

This morning, JD wanted to pick up a couple of items that were on super sale at Kroger. While there, she bought me a couple of bags of Dole Fruit Bites. I felt a bit hungry a little while ago and snagged one of the packs of apple chunks from what she purchased. As I was about to throw away the wrapper upon swallowing the last chunk, I noticed the expiration stamped on the little bag - "Best by Mar 10 2011."

*jawdrop*

I called up Dole and they are going to send me a couple of coupons for free Fruit Bites. They said that the worst thing that is likely to happen to me is a sour or sore tummy if the fruit had started to ferment while waiting on the shelf. I was told that I ought to call Kroger to ensure they pulled any other old bags.

I called up the Kroger and told them about the purchase and subsequent discovery. Cathy apologized and said that the bag should have been pulled from the shelf after the expiration date, but things have been so weird because of the tornado lately. Um...Cathy? These expired OVER two months ago on MARCH 10th. The tornadoes came through at the end of April. These were on the shelf for over 45 days, post-expiration and pre-tornado, and yet they weren't removed. The tornado doesn't excuse it. This is but another instance where the managers of the Huntsville Kroger stores show how poor they are at hiring and training good employees, let alone providing proper management to ensure that each of the stores make SOME SORT of effort to be a customer-friendly place to shop.

This evening after the scout troop meeting, I took the remainder of the apple chunks to Kroger to swap out for a fresh bag. Once someone decided to come and man the customer service desk, I told her of the situation. The lady told me that I could go fetch a new bag from aisle 6.

I went to aisle 6 and found a single bag of the apple chunks next to the overflowing supply of pineapple and mango options. Upon pulling the bag off the shelf, I immediately noticed that this bag ALSO EXPIRED ON MARCH 10, 2011! I called around 1pm today with the complaint...at what point was someone going to check to ensure that there were no other expired apples on the shelves? Were they ever?!

I took the bag with me up to the desk and let her know that the only bag they had was also 2 months expired. She shrugged, tapped the register, and gave me my money.

The complete lack of follow-up on my complaint 8 hours ago and the seeming apathy by the customer relations woman tonight has definitely spurred me to not let this slide. I'm taking my complaint up the chain of command until I reach someone that seems to actually care. I basically only shop at Kroger when they have an excellent sale on something we have good coupons on that item, too OR in an emergency because we live about 3 blocks from one while Publix is several miles away. One can't really shop any less than I do at this store to show my disapproval via "boycott," so I feel a need to take the vocal protest route instead.
