Is there an underground Christian music scene I'm missing? I'm trying to be optimistic that I just haven't found the right resource for finding Contemporary Christian Music (CCM) that interests me musically. If you like pop music, there's TONS of CCM artists that fit into that mold. Like punk? Got you covered there too.
Don't get me wrong. I think Third Day, MercyMe, and Jars of Clay do good music. But I don't get excited about the rhythm of their songs like I do Holy F*#k or Talking Heads nor do I listen intently to the instrument blends like I do Morphine, Ra Ra Riot, or Local Natives. I think Toby Mac and Big Daddy Weave is great for those that really like Smashmouth, Jimmy Eat World, and such. However, where can I find a version of Gossip, Devo, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, or Yeasayer that have lyrics of a religious nature? I've been pleased with the few "club" CCM tracks I've found, but those have been few and far between.
While pondering this yesterday, I stumbled upon the thought of forming an "alternative Christian cover band" that would take the underground music I enjoy and just swap out the lyrics with those of a Christian bent. Since I have next to no musical talent, the more practical idea is probably to write my alternate lyrics for myself to sing along with as I listen to the original. If I do decide to exercise my creative writing skills in this area, you can trust me to post it here on LJ.
