Jul. 10th, 2006 10:16 amMy PC's alive again!
Fil ended up moving everything into a new case (cool black one, with tons of vents!), installed a new motherboard and CPU to replace the ones that got zapped somehow, and he upped my power supply. What I love most about this computer is that it used to have 5 or 6 fans which sounded like a jet engine warming up while it was on. Now, I can barely hear any noise. When the energy saver kicks my monitor off while I'm away, I return only to second guess whether the computer is actually on.
Things, of course, didn't go smoothly when he returned it Saturday night. Windows was refusing to start up. Since the motherboard and CPU were replaced, we were prepared for Bill Gates' evil spirit to deactivate everything out of some sort of fear of me installing everything on a new computer and violating whatever legalese would cause me to spend several hundred to reinstall XP and Office 2003. We used a SeaGate application to check the hard drives then used the wizard on the XP disk to reinstall/replace the missing/funky files. After putting the motherboard CD in for drivers, the computer was completely back to normal.
Other than the computer going missing for a week...or more...this was probably one of the least painful computer fixes I've ever had to a fatal problem. *knocks on wood*
Needlesstosay, I was plugged into Axis & Allies last night once JD retired to the bedroom.
