ganked from 1/2 my flist
Dec. 10th, 2006 07:16 amLike the guys in "High Fidelity," I cringe at the task of selecting a single artist/song/album as the ideal. Every musical judgment should be in groups of 3-5 selections with the understanding that the rankings are subject to debate. But I will dive into this survey nonetheless.
1. Favorite Beatles song: *cringe* Um...uh..."Day in the Life" - artistic, production, role in album, and historical significance make this the winner.
2. Favorite Rolling Stones song: "Gimme Shelter" - The Rolling Stones are best heard through the jukebox of a run-down bar.
3. Favorite Doors song: "Break on Through"
4. Favorite Bob Dylan song: *cringe* Okay, I've said this before...I respect Bob Dylan's songwriting skills because, while I really don't care for any of his recordings, I have enjoyed covers of his songs. Since the Grammy folks define a song as the written form to be translated by the musician, I will say - "All Along the Watchtower"
5. Favorite Led Zeppelin song: *cringe* "Rock and Roll"
6. TV theme song: "Suicide is Painless (MASH)"
7. Favorite Prince song: *cringe* *double-cringe* "1999"
8. Favorite Madonna song: "Live to Tell" - damn, I love the power and fragility of that song.
9. Favorite Michael Jackson song: "Billie Jean"
10. Favorite Queen song: "Killer Queen" - And if it wasn't for that song, there may never have been a Jellyfish.
11. Favorite Motörhead song: "Ace of Spades" - Primarily because that's what they sang on their appearance on "The Young Ones."
12. Favorite song from a cartoon: Maybe it's the time of year affecting this decision..."Christmas Time is Here" from A Charlie Brown Christmas
13. Favorite Bruce Springsteen song: "I'm on Fire"
14. Favorite Depeche Mode song: "Master & Servant" - I have danced to this song TOO many times at TOO many gay bars. Oh, yeah, I'm straight as an arrow! lol
15. Favorite Cure song: "A Forest" - Everything that is The Cure is in that song.
16. Favorite song that most of your friends haven’t heard: "Wallflower" by Kowanko
17. Favorite Smiths song: "How Soon is Now" - although, in all honesty, it could be a minute shorter.
18. Favorite Beastie Boys song: "Somethings's Got to Give"
19. Favorite Clash song: "Lost in the Supermarket"
20. Favorite Police song: "Wrapped Around Your Finger"
21. Favorite Eurythmics song: "Would I Lie to You?" - Uh, uh!
22. Favorite Beach Boys song: *cringe* "Good Vibrations" for up tempo and "In My Room" for a ballad.
23. Favorite Cyndi Lauper song: "Time After Time"
24. Favorite song from a movie: *cringe* Okay, I'm going to limit the song selection to those songs written for a movie..."Mrs. Robinson" in The Graduate
25. Favorite Duran Duran song: "Save a Prayer"
26. Favorite Johnny Cash song: "Folsom Prison Blues"
27. Favorite song from an Eighties one hit wonder: "Break My Stride" by Matthew Wilder
28. Favorite song from a video game: Galaga Theme Song
29. Favorite Kinks song: "Picture Book"
30. Favorite Genesis song: Hmmmm...the lesser of the evils would be..."Tonight, Tonight, Tonight"
31. Favorite Thin Lizzy song: I think "The Boys are Back in Town" is the only song I really know by them.
32. Favorite INXS song: "Need You Tonight"
33. Favorite Weird Al song: *cringe* Are you judging the source material? Are you judging his take on the source? Uh, I'll give a nice generic - his medleys he puts on each album.
34. Favorite Peter Gabriel song: While Passion is one of the greatest CDs to play during love-making, I'm going to tap "The Blood of Eden" as my fav.
35. Favorite John Lennon song: Decided to ignore his Beatles songs for this: "Instant Karma!"
36. Favorite Pink Floyd song: *cringe* "The Great Gig in the Sky"
37. Favorite cover song: "The Man Who Sailed Around His Soul" by Ruben Blades (XTC cover)
38. Favorite song to dance to: *cringe* "Chains of Love" by Erasure
39. Favorite U2 song: "Where the Streets Have No Name"
40. Favorite song from an actor turned musician: "Rocket Man" by William Shatner
41. Favorite disco song: "I Love the Night Life" by Alicia Bridges
42. Favorite power ballad: "Home Sweet Home" by Motley Crue
43. Favorite Guns N’ Roses song: "Paradise City"
44. Favorite The Who song: "Baba O'Reilly"
45. Favorite Elton John song: I'm split between "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" and "Someone Saved My Life Tonight"
46. Favorite song, period: *THE MOTHER OF ALL CRINGES* "Aja" by Steely Dan and "God Only Knows" by The Beach Boys
47. Favorite Sting song: Not counting any Police songs..."We'll Be Together"
48. Favorite Billy Joel song: "Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)"
49. Favorite Burt Bacharach song: "Wishin' and Hopin'" - Love Ani DiFranco's cover of the song on the My Best Friend's Wedding soundtrack. Okay, and Rupert's version from the movie is cute, too.
50. First popular song you have a memory of hearing on the radio: My first radio memories weren't centered around a single song. In the late 70's, we were stationed in West Germany and my mom seemed to have Armed Forces Radio on all the time. I used to listen to the radio skits of "Chickenman" and songs such as "Moonlight Feels Right" by Starbuck or "Afternoon Delight" by Starland Vocal Band.
51. Favorite Eagles song: "Take It Easy" I'll add that the Eagle's Greatest Hits 1 is one of the best albums to listen to when driving long distance and "Take It Easy" being first just gets you in the right mindset.
