Probably my biggest annoyance and challenge while working with the Scouts is getting them to make the weekly calls on Sunday to ensure everyone is ready for the meeting on Wednesday nights. It was done on an absolutely minimal basis for the first couple of Assistant Senior Patrol Leaders (ASPL) I worked with upon my return. It reached the worst situation two ASPLs ago, when the boys elected a kid with no interest whatsoever to pull himself away from whatever he was done on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday nights to make a single phone call - for much of his 6 month service. Personality wise, I used to like the kid. He lost all favor from me after that tenure.
The last ASPL wasn't perfect, but was remorseful when he forgot to do calls.
I think I've reached the Promised Land after a phone call I just had from our new ASPL (elected before T-giving).
*phone rings*
Me: 'Ola!
Kid: Hello, could I speak to Mr. Berry. This is J.
Me: Hi, J, wazzup.
Kid: Mr. Berry, I'm still in Kentucky tonight. I think I have all the phone numbers, but could you tell me who is responsible for what so I can go ahead and call them tonight?
The 60 seconds I spent on the phone reading him the duty list for Wednesday night was the least I could do for this kid. Viva anal Scouts!!!
