Aug. 27th, 2002 07:15 pmWork has been cranked up 10 notches. What started out as a slow rise has been growing exponentially in the past few months. Each ratings book, things look more promising but we nonetheless put more pressure on ourselves to do better the next time around. This is the best station that I've worked at and I'm doing the best job that I've ever done. However, the only people working on the show when the mics are off are Darrell and myself. In the two previous markets there was always a third and --to some extent-- a pseudo-forth person pitching in. The two of us are trying to keep producing at the level that we've psyched ourselves up to without burning ourselves out. I'll be dancing a big ol' jig IMO when January comes around and we see where we are in the ratings. I can feel the bonuses that are on the horizon.
But first I'll have to make it through the next 2 weeks. We've approached the time that I've been dreading. September 11th was bad enough as a Joe Citizen (especially w/ my parents both working at the Pentagon at the time), but I've been excessively happy that I was unemployed at the time and didn't have to cover it. Now I'm having to cover the anniversary of an event I don't want to cover and utilize the level of performance that I've raised myself to in this endeavor. I so wish that I could have a short bout w/ the West Nile Virus or something so I could just fast forward past this. It's the newsy-journalism stuff that really annoys me about my job. I like news, but I've never liked being the one covering it. I'd much rather do a show on lifestyle subjects than politics/news, but I'm too good and used to doing what I do to enjoy getting a job that I never covered news. I think I'd go just as insane if I produced a Top 40 show or chatty-positive talk show and never discussed this other stuff. I gotta have a balance, I guess, is what all of this is trying to convey with an overabundance of words.
Calvin is doing well. He's been really gassy/cranky these past few weeks, but he seems to be turning a corner. The doc upping his Zantac dosage has really helped w/ his spitting up (which, thankfully, still isn't projectile...it just dribbles out). He's starting to actually look at our faces instead of in our general direction. Last night he slept for 6 1/2 hours! He tends to have about 3 nights a week that he gets a 4 or 5 hour stretch, but there is usually at least one night that it's still 1 hour naps. Just to get nice and gross...his poops have been more reminiscent of curry lately. Since JD and I haven't had curry in months, this color and smell similarity is a bit grimacing and perplexing. :) Calvin loves riding horsey - especially with my quickly vibrating restless leg twitch - and also enjoys lying on his back getting his legs exercised. He "geez," laughs, and coos to these things.
Dixie Chicks new album rules.
The Royal Tennenbaums is one of the best movies in the past decade. And Quinton Tarantino is a motherfucker for not putting audio commentary on the newly released Jackie Brown DVD!
With JD being a stay-at-home mom, paying the $12/month extra for the 7 HBOs and 8 Starz channels (along w/ having a Tivo or a VCR to record all of the movies to watch some other time).
