My family was an ABC News household when I was growing up. Whether for good or ill, my parents didn't seem to think to shy me away from watching the news with them. Upon our return from (West) Germany in 1979, watching ABC's "World News Tonight with Peter Jennings" was part of the daily routine. His presentation of the news was even-keeled, informative, and yet he could deliver lifestyle/humorous stories with a bit of a smirk that reminded you that he was human. Even after leaving the house, I've preferred Jennings to the emotional and indignant Rather or the sophisticated-cowboy delivery of Brokaw (every word seemed to have an "r" sound).

He was unlike the new breed of anchors that went from desk job to desk job with occasional "adventure vacation" coverage (compare covering a hurricane on the Gulf coast with years as a correspondent in the Middle East). Although Jennings seemed to get a bit of a smug air to himself in recent years IMO, I've always respected him as a journalist and would like to send my condolences to his family and colleagues.
