Good Day

You wanna know the highlight of my day?
I spent nearly 2 hours pacing back and forth on the top parking deck at Huntsville "International" Airport.

Did I lose my car?
Nope.

Was I waiting to pick someone up?
Nope.

I was there with Calvin to watch planes take-off and land. I've been thinking about doing this for a few weeks now but had a good opportunity today.

When I lived in Nashville, I lived under one of the main flight paths coming into their airport. My apartment was on top of a hill and we were only 2-3 miles from the landing strips. The planes would get so low over our apartments that it was occasionally like that scene in "Wayne's World." I loved sitting out on my porch in the evening, watch the neighbors come home from their 9-5 jobs, and watch the planes arrive or depart overhead.

Calvin will stand and watch a long train slowly pass...and he'll barely budge. "Elmo's World" and "Blue's Clues" are the only other things that illicit that much devotion. I thought he'd get a kick out of watching the planes at the airport. Boy, was I right. Since there's not an observation deck or anything of that sort, I had scoped out the parking deck during my visit a week ago. If the hotel wasn't the same height as the parking deck, we probably wouldn't have had to move from one side to the other to check out the east and west sides of the airport's single-pier concourse and parallel runways. There was a bit of good luck on our side. This is Huntsville, AL, so it's not like there are two planes landing simultaneously. For some reason there was a US Air Force jet (something about the size of a 707) doing touch-and-go's for about 30-45 minutes. When everything else started going still, we could just go to the west runway and watch it come through.

He didn't want to leave, but didn't put up too much of a fight (it was a very sunny and 80's day after all). I was grateful that I didn't have to worry about some security guard approaching us because we were "scoping out" the airport. If it wasn't for that concern, I'd take binoculars with me.

Next time you decide to go call me, I have been wanting to take some pictures of planes. Then you can look through my telephoto, but blame everything on me if anyone gets suspicious. lol
