After a week delay, JD and I got to see Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy on Saturday. My thoughts...

1. I strongly recommend that ANYONE that goes to see H2G2 have some sort of familiarity with previous editions of the story. There are many key elements delivered in lines that just fly by if you aren't paying attention. Also, the Vogons were extremely difficult to understand. The reverb + mumbling + British accent = times I wish it was on Tivo so I could skip back and re-hear lines.

2. Douglas said that the movie would be different than the British TV version...which was different than the book...which was different than the radio series... He even contributed a new character when writing the screenplay for the movie ("Humma Kavula" played by John Malkovich). Overall, I didn't get any OMG moments of them completely scrambling details of the source material.

3. The special effects are mind-numbingly impressive.

4. Martin Freeman as Arthur Dent - exactly what I expected Arthur to be like.

Mos Def as Ford Prefect - like the character, but he mumbled so much I had difficulty understanding him.

Zooey Deschanel as Trillian - she's so cute and pleasant that I really liked this version. I must confess that it was a bit odd to see her pining for Arthur, rather than it just being an unrequited crush on his part.

Sam Rockwell as Zaphod Breeblebrox - Loved this version of Zaphod. The special effects made this character much more real. It is VERY obvious that Sam is doing his impersonation of George W. Bush.

Alan Rickman was excellently cast as Marvin's voice...unfortunately, our favorite paranoid android is reduced to an occasional depressing comment during each scene. He's barely more of a character than the sighing doors of the Heart of Gold. This is probably the most disappointing aspect of the movie for me.

5. For fans of the five book trilogy, this is a must-see that you will enjoy. It is packed with so much going on that it seems likely to hold up after repeat viewings on DVD.

Yeah!!!

Sam is the next Steve Buschemi...just riding under the radar turning in superb performances of men on the edges of society and sanity. I first noticed Sam in "Galaxy Quest" (a very under-rated movie that is fun for all ages without seeming like a "family movie"). He's one of those actors that it was "love at first sight" After "Charlie's Angels" and "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind," I can say that he is a box office draw for me.

...the trick is for me to be able to actually go to the theater. Thankfully, Nigel handled the 2 hours appart very well and we may soon see the return of our weekend datenight.
