What the hell ever happened to a nice san-serif font like Verdana or Tahoma?

I have a co-worker who types all of her business emails in Comic Sans, 10 pt bold and always, always, ALWAYS adds a little smiley emoticon like this: :c)

It's gotten to the point that I've developed an unconscious rolling of the eyes each time I see that font. When I went to CNN.com earlier and saw that photo, my jaw dropped.

I guess it could have been worse. They might have used Jokerman...
