Self - Subliminal Plastic Motives

Self, essentially, is Matt Mahaffey. When I moved to Nashville a decade ago, Lightning 100 played "Cannon" and "So Low" quite a bit from this Mid-Tenn band. I remember that one of the girls in the 1st or 2nd Road Rules wore a Self t-shirt a bunch...otherwise, I'm not certain how much mainstream exposure the band has received.

Imagine that Jellyfish and Weezer went into the studio together...with Beck producing. What you get is a fun, melodic, pop album that would have been a Top 40 hit in an alternate lifetime.

A great thing about Self...you can download a ton of songs at their site:

I have a cover of green day's "basketcase" by Moog Cookbook. It is sooo "What a Fool Believes" - but instrumental.

Moog Cookbook (Roger Manning, half of the duo, was in Jellyfish...if you didn't know) is such a fun band to listen to. My favs of theirs are: Are You Gonna Go My Way, Hotel California, and Cat Scratch Fever.

More Moog Cookbook trivia: They composed the cover of "Big Me" that is featured at the beginning of the Foo Fighter's video for "Monkey Wrench." Dave had commissioned both Muzak and Moog Cookbook for covers, but went with Moog because he thought they sounded more Muzak-esque than Muzak.
