Self - Subliminal Plastic Motives

Self, essentially, is Matt Mahaffey. When I moved to Nashville a decade ago, Lightning 100 played "Cannon" and "So Low" quite a bit from this Mid-Tenn band. I remember that one of the girls in the 1st or 2nd Road Rules wore a Self t-shirt a bunch...otherwise, I'm not certain how much mainstream exposure the band has received.

Imagine that Jellyfish and Weezer went into the studio together...with Beck producing. What you get is a fun, melodic, pop album that would have been a Top 40 hit in an alternate lifetime.

A few years ago they had an album (Gizmodgery) that was recorded using children's instruments. The highlight for me was their cover of "What a Fool Believes" (and this is coming from a guy with a crush on Michael McDonald's voice...before he lost it in the 90's).
