JD and I are in the midst of landscaping our yard. We are killin' off about 1/5 of the yard to be converted into plant beds, herb garden, and a mulched play area for Calvin and Froggie.

I decided that it would be really cool to rent a sod cutter to remove the turf. The previous owners put some very nice sod...only in a strip around the concrete pad that is our back patio. It seemed that saving that area of good grass to fill in a couple of dirt patches in the front would be good. Also, I could strip up whatever grass in the bell-shaped area in the back that is the bulk of the landscaped area we're working on.

We paid just under $90 for a sod cutter from Sat at noon till Monday at 8am. It was picked up and dropped off at the house yesterday. I wasn't going to attack the yard until Sunday morning.

Let's just say that operating that sod cutter was one of the more frustrating and painful things to do. The damned thing weighs 500 lbs, it can be a real bitch to push when the wheels encounter the tiniest of divots. My turf cutting was so horrible that the good sod was chopped all to hell.

I decided merely to outline the area for extinction and come in with Roundup to smite the thicket of weeds. The soil was a good bit easier outside of the Bermuda patch, but it was still torture.

I will never use a sod cutter again. Been there, done that. Have the sore body to prove it.
