I really love "Teardrop" and "Protection" by Massive Attack and was hopeful that I would find their other songs just as enjoyable. Sadly, though, that was not the case. Mezzanine excels at setting a gloomy mood, but I wasn't really compelled by the songs. I had several moments while listening where I thought "I like how the heavy metal guitars sound with the soft female vocals" or "That's a great sample that is oddly placed with that guitar riff." Unfortunately, I just didn't care much for the songs.
What killed the album for me is the monotone rapping by one of the performers. It was kinda okay during my first listen, but his vocals grated on my nerves with each repeated play.
Songs I knew I liked: "Teardrop"
Songs I didn't know but now like: "Exchange," "Dissolved Girl," and "Man Next Door"
Songs I can go the rest of my life without hearing again: Other than the monotone rapping, I wasn't really turned off by any of the songs.
