I gave a name to my '92 Saturn SC that I got when I went to college - Sadie. I swapped Sadie for my mom's '95 Chevy Monte Carlo in 2001, but never named my new car. I loved, loved, loved my Saturn for its first 8 years. It seemed that other than the snowballing mechanical problems, Sadie was still a beloved vehicular companion.

I think my resentment for having to say goodbye to Sadie was redirected at the Monte Carlo - a car that cornered like a barge and was so horribly user-unfriendly under the hood that jump-starting the battery required the removal of several items that blocked access to the terminals. My emotions toward the car undoubtedly affected how I cared for the Monte Carlo over the past 8 1/2 years. Not that I abused it or anything. I never felt any need to pamper it and insisted at looking at it in a more practical or utility/tool manner.

All of the above has become much more apparent to me after upgrading from the Monte Carlo to a '99 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Despite for my constantly reading about how crappy the Grand Cherokee is through the years, this SUV has been tremendously dependable and is well maintained. You know something I did within a few weeks of getting the SUV that I never did in all of those years of owning the Monte Carlo? I gave it a hand washing.

I've emphasized to JD that my #1 realistic gift wish for my birthday later this month is to get a decorative license plate for the front of the Jeep. I would like a white/cream/tan Uffington Horse on a forest green background...or as [livejournal.com profile] auronsgirl is already ID'ed...the cover art for XTC's English Settlement.

So, although I don't have a name for the Jeep now, I am hopeful that I may feel emotionally ready to do it again. ;)

"Is ID'ed" (as in the tattoo) or "has ID'ed" (as in I know what it is)?

:P

OMG, I remember that Saturn . . . you had to park it in the lot behind our apt. when I lived behind the strip.

The only car I had that was christened was my first car: a 1973 Toyota Corolla given to me and my brother by my parents in 1982 (they purchased it brand new in 1973). It was orange with brown vinyl interior, and its name was Carmen. Reason? When my parents first brought the car home, the color reminded me of the orange that sang Carmen's aria "L'Amour" on Sesame Street.

I got sloppy with tense change there for some reason with "has identified." *headscratch*
