This is the least "Burtonish" Tim Burton movie...and I think that is best for "Big Fish." The fantasy/story scenes were perfectly painted by Burton, but he was able to step back and act/direct normal in the other scenes; which let the viewer differentiate between the reality and the "storytelling" in the movie. I don't think that his fans will dislike it at all. It is an endearing movie that is the one most likely to capture the mainstream adult audience.
I'm not the moody type with movies, but I had a hardcore tear-up at the end of the movie when Albert Finney's character was dying (you know he's going to die by the end of the movie, so I'm not spoiling anything). If you cry at movies, take a big box of tissues for the ending.
The only problem that I had with the movie were just a few scenes that had me scratching my head w/ confusion of what was going on or how one event lead to another. Don't think it was bad editing or that I missed something, but just the story kinda skipping a few little things. Oh, there were a few times I cringed because it seems that Ewan McG used the same Southern accent his character in "Down with Love" used. It wasn't bad except when he gave that smarmy grin like the "astronaut" did.
