Harper: Demon of the Night
My bad night can't be completely blamed on Harper, but she's been an overnight terror for the past week and have ground JD and I down to a pulp. It's hard to enjoy the times where the boys are off with grandparents because Harper's been so demanding/needy lately.
Around 10:30pm last night, JD and I are getting in some TV and I hear an alert go off on my cellphone. I was added to the server alerts a couple of weeks ago when Mike went on a week vacation. I'm only getting them so if no one has taken any action after the first few, I can try to track Andy down to fix the server(s). Andy nor Mike have taken me off the alerts yet. I had about six alerts last evening while getting candy, so I wasn't in a big rush to get this alert.
JD and I retire to the bedroom at 11pm. As I'm getting situated, the flashing red light on my mobile reminds me of the alert. But, SURPRISE!, it wasn't a server alert, it was an AnteSpam support ticket. The only details I can see on the mobile is the subject line. It says something like, "Why am I marked as a spammer?" and it comes from an aol.com address. There is enough urgency for me to investigate this that I get up to check out the ticket on my PC. As I approach the bedroom door, Harper wakes up. JD and I have a deal that I get Harper from bedtime to midnight. But since I had already procrastinated getting to this ticket, I asked JD if she could get Harper. JD wasn't happy about it but agreed.
A little before midnight, I'm done with the ticket. Things have quieted down with Harper, so I return to bed to go to sleep. As I'm drifting off, I hear Harper break into cries. JD had likely put her back down only for an immediate reawakening. I did my best to go to sleep. Some time later, I wake up when JD comes back to bed.
I was shaken awake at 4am. JD had already gone back in with Harper and only returned to our bed 20 minutes before. She begged for me to take care of Harper now since she got her at 11pm. I obliged. Harper was acting fully awake when I entered her room. She was standing up, holding onto the bed railing, and grunt-yelling like a jock trying to psych himself up. I pat her down and am pleased with how quickly she calms down and lies still...as long as I am patting her. As soon as I stop patting, the girl's head pops up and stares at me. Eventually, she remains still when I stop patting. I watch her for a minute or two and slowly crawl out of bed. Just as my back hits my bed, Harper is whining and crying. I return to her room. In the minute I had been out of her room, she had turned around and crawled from near the foot to the head of the bed. This time I grab the blanket and pulled it up over her lower half while I pat her down. She goes quicker this time (or maybe it was my drifting in and out of sleep at this point - near 5am). I finally returned to bed.
An alarm wakes me up at 6:30am. I'm pissed and confused. First, I thought the clock radio was set to go off at 7am. Secondly, I was beating the ever-loving shit out of the clock radio, but the alarm kept going. I soon realized that it was my mobile going off and not the clock radio. I take a peek. Don't you know it is a picture of an old friend of mine's son dressed up as a mummy for Halloween. AAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRGH!!!
I can't really blame Brian for what he did, but it was horrible timing for me. I pretty much angrily napped for the next 20 or so minutes before I knew I had to get up to prepare the house for JD's childbirthing classes today.
I'm just SO DONE WITH BABIES! I've had my fill of (in no particular order):
1. Buying diapers
2. Harper eating anything she finds on the floor
3. Changing diapers
4. Bibs and messy eating
5. Poopy diapers
6. Baby breastfeeding and the restraints that puts on time JD and Harper spend apart
7. Wiping poop out of female nooks and crannies
8. Harper's inability to communicate with words
9. Nearly dying when I accidentally breathe while putting diapers in the diaper pail
10. Trying to keep Harper out of the bathroom/forbidden zones
11. Diapers that leak poop
12. Two naps a day which fluctuate
13. Discovering that a wet diaper is actually poopy and not having enough wipes handy
14. The baby bag and needed supplies which must accompany her on any ventures out of the house
15. Changing diapers in public restrooms/places
16. Having a stroller stored in the SUV...taking up the cargo space behind the third row
17. Changing diapers in public restrooms that DON'T have a diaper changing station
18. That "You're Not Mommy" cry/scream I get sometimes
But I'll cope thanks to:
1. Harper is cute! Even when she does that snaggle-toothed "potato face."
2. She's growing up and is slowly getting more independent and lower maintenance...SLOWLY...the key word is "slowly," though
3. When I look at her, pucker my lips big, and go "mmmmmmmmmm;" Harper responds by smiling and giving me a kiss. She'll do it over and over.
4. She is a girl, so it is my first time around for the Daddy/Daughter feelings and such
5. Walking around with her in a sling is bliss - it feels nice, we both enjoy it, and it's nice to get all the smiles, coos, and comments when I'm toting her around in public.
6. Calvin and Nigel are pretty good about helping out with Harper
