It's one thing to fall in love with a new album by an artist you like or fall in love with a new band with a good album, but I'm excited about a great new band and the craftsmanship that came together to make their stellar album.

Silversun Pickups - Carnavas

I've started to pay attention when FF'ing through MTV video segments on Tivo (yes, apparently MTV does play videos occasionally. Never when I'm watching, but Tivo finds those blocks of videos and is nice enough to record them for me every now and then) for the "Discover & Download" icons. While I get a kick out of Mika and Lily Allen (who is screaming for her own reality show), I must watch each time Silverspun Pickups' "Lazy Eye" comes on.

I listened to some online samples the other night and listened to what Barnes & Noble snipped from the songs. I left B&N with a copy of the CD. While music reviews often reference My Bloody Valentine and Smashing Pumpkins when describing their sound, my initial thoughts were that the songs on the album sounded like my favorite traits from Sonic Youth's Daydream Nation, Smashing Pumpkins' Gish, and Slowdive (I'm primarily familiar with Souvlaki). Great layers of sound, actual areas of melody, and feedback used more sparingly than my recollections of My Bloody Valentine...but extremely effective use of cacophony, such as in the CD closer "Common Reactor."

I haven't been this excited about a new artist/album discovery in close to 10 years.
