220 - The Meters - Look-ka Py Py

The Meters' Look-Ka Py Py is a collection of mostly instrumental funk (vocals are mostly shout-outs and scatting). Considering that nearly every song is under three minutes, the album speeds right by. For me, the funk groove caused an instant urge to hit repeat to the album, although tracks like "This is My Last Affair" (with its strolling organ taking the melodical lead) found themselves skipped upon further listens. It really does seem to me that the strength of The Meters was the rhythm section (admittedly, nearly all instruments seem to fit into the "rhythm section" category with the syncopation and staccato melodic style). The bass and off-kilter drumming snagged my attention quite often.
Let's face it, the Beastie Boys could have done a kick ass cover of "Rigor Mortis" on Ill Communication. I think it could be argued that every single Quintin Tarantino movie should have a Meters song somewhere in the soundtrack. The question with this album isn't whether or not the music is any good, it's merely whether or not you and it are in the same groove.
Songs I Knew I Liked: None
Songs I Now Like: "Look-Ka Py Py," "Rigor Mortis," "Pungee," "Yeah, You're Right," "Little Old Money Maker," and "Oh, Calcutta"
Songs I Can Go the Rest of My Life Never Hearing Again: I don't dislike these songs, it's just a matter of these being the ones I skipped on later listens... "This is My Last Affair," "The Mob," and "Dry Spell"
