356 - Miles Davis - Sketches of Spain
Oct. 17th, 2011 02:03 pmI've enjoyed having this album on in the background. Unfortunately, I don't get much pleasure when I pay more attention to it. There is definitely a story involved in the the two long tracks that bookend this album, but I felt more like it was a movie soundtrack that was supporting another media in the storytelling. I consider this a good random album for someone's collection, like that one ambient/trance album you put on when you are struggling with insomnia or the one world music album you have that you like to listen to when cleaning house with the windows open or that one opera CD you have for times when are in a certain mood. This album could be your token Spanish/jazz album for when you find yourself thinking naughty thoughts about Penelope Cruz or Javier Bardem.
But as background music, it really is pretty. Is it jazz? Is it traditional Spanish folk music? Not really. It is a nice amalgamation of styles that was an interesting exploration on the part of Miles. Thankfully, that curiosity of the different directions that jazz could stretch and cross over into other musical genres didn't stop with this album.
