csberry: (cocktails)
This past March, I gifted my old '95 Monte Carlo to my dad. He then gifted it to the American Cancer Society. On Friday, I got a letter in the mail from the municipal court telling me I had an overdue parking violation for parking the Monte Carlo in a handicapped spot a couple of weeks ago. It turns out that no one ever removed my old plate from the car. And, joy of joys, the presumption is that the registrant of the vehicle is the offender in parking violations.

Over the weekend, I got the documentation from my gifting and Dad's gifting all set. This morning I went to the magistrate's office at the justice center. After giving me a stern look over her glasses when I mentioned I left my plate on the car, she agreed to null the violation. However, she said that as long as the license department has that license plate registration info, I will continue to get tickets that the current driver accrues. I left there on a mission to go to the license department to null the registration or something.

After swinging by the house for a new set of copies of the paperwork (since the magistrate kept the copies I brought), I went to Parkway Place to get this resolved. Alas, the line was wrapped back and forth in the queue, out the office door, and stretched into the large mall walkway. Not seeing the point in waiting that long, I decided to head to my office, eat lunch, and then try the license office at the courthouse downtown. Phew, there was a much shorter line there.

I told the clerk my story and she grabbed a supervisor. The supervisor told me there's nothing I can do, they need for someone from the ACS to contact them (as she chided me for leaving the license plate on, my dad for not registering the title for the car in his name, and then the ACS for them not doing a title change either). I then called the 888 number on the form I had from the ACS. The lady on the other end of the phone then complained that I should have contacted her before going to the magistrate. I was supposed to have known, apparently, that ACS would have contacted them and provided the paperwork necessary to correct the situation. She then asked what the license department wanted. What followed was 3-5 minutes of my trying to tell her what the license folks said and her telling me that she's in Maryland and didn't know what she needs to do to help me. Finally, she asks for my last name and looked up the car in her computer. Thankfully, that must have spurred some inspiration in her because just a minute after I confirmed she had the right file, she said that she'd take care of it. *shrugs*

Now I'm going to try to move on to solving my other problems and pray that another parking ticket for the Monte Carlo isn't on the way.
