The sky is falling!
Nov. 20th, 2006 12:07 pmLast Monday I get a message on my answering machine from the roofing contractor. He says we're scheduled "for 12/14." That was fine with me. The four week wait was less than they had originally indicated and shorter than a couple of other bids.
Then the supplies show up last Wednesday. I start feeling concerned about the supplies staying there for a full month. This weekend, I notice a cheap competitor's truck slowly driving back and forth on my street. I convince myself that I'll wake up one morning sans supplies in my driveway.
This morning while doing my usual morning routine w/ email and the web, I hear guys yelling in my front yard. The sight of 6 Latino men hopping out of a minivan instantly registers as "the roofers are here!" Since my guys said it wouldn't be until next month, I look on the side of the pick-up that contains two old white guys. Yep, it's the right company...just had today open up for whatever reason.
Now I've got the constant noise coming from overhead. I opened my garage and told a couple of guys having their lunch break that they are invited in to get out of the wind. One guy said "Yea" and they all went on as if they didn't understand English. Hey, "get out of the cold" wasn't a Spanish phrase I picked up while living in East Dallas. I'm just hoping they understand when I verify that they are removing the cupola with wind vane from above my garage. That ugly thing's gotta go.
**Update** As soon as writing the above, I called the contractor to let him know that I told a couple of his workers about removing the cupola, but wanted to be certain to call him since I wasn't certain if they understood me.
