Sleepless in Chattanooga
Apr. 30th, 2006 01:18 amI think God is trying to keep me from returning to Chattanooga ever again.
The last time (aka - my first time) I stayed in Chattanooga was a couple of months ago when we stayed at the Chatt Choo-Choo Hotel. The train car sleeper rooms were nice, but I was awake all night from the noise of the guests noisily walking past the trains to their rooms in the building on the other side of the train sheds and the dripping leak inside our train car.
This time we're at the Courtyard Marriott in downtown. It's right across the street from the TN Aquarium! How convenient can you get? Unfortunately, immediately next door is a Tortilla Factory with a second story "porch bar." They've got a private party with a DJ going...very loudly.
I feel like such an old man, but I can't get to sleep, my parents were unable to get to sleep when I saw them a little before 11pm, and JD and Calvin keep waking up but are able to drift off. However, both of them have had very long and active days - JD was woken up during the 5am hour to help a friend in labor and Calvin was run ragged by his uncle and grandparents at the children's science museum and along the riverfront.
The valarian in my system, the A/C on high, and radio static are unable to drown out the music. Why did fate pick for us to be on this side of the hotel and not the other side?
I called the front desk and was told that the music was supposed to stop at midnight and they had called the cops and sheriff's office. I called the police to file a noise complaint (something I've done previously in my life but have never actually seen/heard anything done about it by the police in Nashville, Dallas, or H'ville). They said that they'd "check on it." At 1am, I walk over to ask how late the DJ is scheduled to play and am told he's paid to play to 2am. I roll my eyes and beg the bouncer to tap the volume from 11 to a 9. As I walk away, he yells at the DJ but I don't hear what he says after getting the guy's attention (and I don't think I was supposed to hear what he said). As far as I know, the bouncer made a song request. When I walk past the front desk of the hotel, I tell the guy (the same one I talked to earlier on the phone) about the 2am thing. He then tells me that there's nothing he can do about it because of the noise ordinance. *scratches head* Didn't he tell me earlier that he had already called the police? I then ask if the rooms on the other side of the hotel are at the same rate or if our rooms were discounted because of the excessive noise. He chuckles, says they're all the same price, and then returns to looking at his computer monitor.
So here I lay on the floor trying to vent and kill the time until the DJ quits. I'm not certain which is worse: the being awake and unable to relax enough to go to sleep OR That everyone that I've talked to about the noise has merely patronized me.
Tomorrow is supposed to be for a full day at the aquarium. I hope I don't spend my morning trying to catch up on sleep until they kick me out of the room at noon.
The next time we come to Chattanooga, we won't be staying at either the Chatt Choo-Choo hotel or the Courtyard Marriott. Lord, the only reason why we're coming right now is our family membership to the aquarium. Maybe we'll only do day trips from now on to Chattanooga.
