"To enjoy a book... I find I have to treat it as a sort of hobby and set about it seriously. I begin by making a map on one of the end leafs; then I put in a genealogical tree or two; then I put a running headline at the top of each page; finally I index at the end all the passages I have for some reason underlined. I often wonder -- considering how people enjoy themselves developing photos or making scrapbooks -- why so few people make a hobby of their reading in this way. Now, I'm anal retentive...but I don't know if I could quite do this to the extent Lewis suggests. I LOVE the idea of doing it when I go through some of my "research" books (I miss school so much that I occasionally actually give myself research papers to write though I usually do the research, take notes, and then only jot down thoughts for the paper...yeah, I'm a freak).
