Suffered for too many hours today trying to get attic stairs put up in the garage. It seemed to be going along smoothly, with a minor but time consuming problem. Then, WHAMMO we break it when he come across Problem #2.

Either we completely missed a step (after several readings of the instructions) or it was missing from the instructions. There were bolts that were left loose by the factory so an arm could pivot to fit into the box. At some point, they should have been tightened. We never could find that step, so we didn't tighten it. Unfortunately that joint had to deal with enough stress that the bolt sheared right off.

We called up Lowe's about the problem and asked what we should do. The lovely lady on the other side of the line said for us to bring in the broken part. So, we showed up with the ladder portion. Dealt with the most sour-pussed group of employees I've encountered in a while. Everyone was in a foul mood.

Got home, put it up and together relatively painlessly. However, we kept having problems of the stairs being slightly out of square and arms swaying a little when they bent. The stairs are one washer away from being perfect.

I did get metal stairs. They are roomier than other ladders, seem to weigh less, and look cooler. I'm not certain if I can blame metal (vs. wood) on these assembly difficulties as opposed to the folks at Werner. We love their extension and folding ladders, but have found these a bit rickety and awkward.

Yeah, my life's dramas are truly mundane.
