Panama City Beach
Jul. 26th, 2003 08:49 amWe just returned from 5 days in Panama City Beach. JD's family owns a house down there (was her g'mom's before she died) and we joined her relatives from Atlanta for several days. It's a great location...just cross the street and you are on the beach...if it wasn't for the sand dunes you'd be able to see the waves from the house. The most "fun" was driving to and from there. It's a 6 1/2 hour drive. How the hell do we get Calvin to take this trip? Our solution
was to break it up so he could nap. He took a 2 hour nap to B'ham, we hung out w/ one of his great-grandmas for a couple of hours for dinner, give him a bath, and he goes to sleep when we hop back in the car (had to improvise w/ a Steak n Shake in Dothan -2 hours from PCB- on the way back). Calvin got to hang around w/ his college aged cousins and their girlfriends. Needless to say, the girlfriends and Aunt Dru were attached to him most of the time.
It is starting to look like another summer will go by w/o me being able to darken my skin from "Elmer's Glue" to "off-white." The sun wasn't out much while we were there. I did get about 3/4 of the way thru an Elmore Leonard short story collection.
Calvin had his first independent steps while we were there. He was able to take 4 unassisted steps and has made 2 more ventures of walking w/o holding anything. When we first arrived, we took him to the beach and he was horrified by the ocean/gulf. JD walked him to the edge of the water in her arms, but he was unable to recover until we walked back to the sand dunes. He did, however, really enjoy the kiddie pool and we were able to hang out there a few times while we were there. At the end of the week we gave the beach another shot. JD and I walked along the beach, slowly working our way to the water. This gradual approach worked and he didn't freak at all when I walked into the water w/ him on my back. Getting him to actually stand in the waves would have been too much to ask him. :)
One of the cousins and his soon-to-be fiancee are doing Weight Watchers online and the idea of not having to go to meetings or being weighed in front of a bunch of people caught JD's interest, so she's about to join the program. She is planning on buying a bag of peanut butter M&Ms today and will start WW on Monday. Both of us could probably create a teenager w/ the combined weight that we would like to lose. I'm still doing the Jorge Cruise "8 Min" thing and feel better about the exercising, but have been skipping/shortening exercises some mornings (more the 1/2 of the time because of the mornings where I have "control" of him and his wandering ways makes it hard for me to stay in one spot to do the workout). I am starting to get eager for fall so getting outdoors on my bike will have more appeal than the current hot 'n' sticky situation.
