My 2000 computer hates me
May. 7th, 2003 09:19 pmA week or so ago my Office Suite programs started revolting against me. It escalated to the point that I can't have Word open longer than 10 seconds before it logs and error and closes. I'm not kidding about a maximum of 10 seconds, either. This has been a burr in my butt because I'm spending the remainder of my time at the station copying my rolodex from Word to Excel so D and his new producer has a copy - she's giving me hers to add to the Excel version, so we are both benefiting from this project. As you might imagine, in the past 6 years, I've collected quite a few contacts and names in my rolodex. This isn't a quick data entry project for me. So to lose the ability to do it on my 2000 sucked. Thankfully, I still have my 98 that I've reconnected to the network in the house (in other words, I now have both computer towers sitting next to my rolling chair under the extension of my desk), Office Suite is working fine on that and I've been able to begin the project...however somewhat delayed.
THEN THIS EVENING...I've been working on the rolodex on the 98 while ripping/burning CDs that are mine that D wants to have a copy of & CDs that are D's/the station's that I want a copy of on the 2000. It has been a nice system. The problem is that on my 98, when MusicMatch was done ripping, it would pop the CD out to let me know it was done. This hasn't happened on the 2000. Oh, well. Since I'm working on the 98 while the CDs are in the 2000, that would be handy, but I've gotten over it. So, this evening, I put another CD in to rip and take care of dinner. When I return, the CD-ROM is open. I check to make certain that there wasn't an error while ripping to cause the door to pop open. The files seem fine, so...oh, well. Later I sit back down and resume my work on the rolodex and ripping. After putting in numerous entries, I adjust myself in my chair because my butt is a bit sore on one side...POP! The CD-ROM door has opened, placing itself in harms way where I blindly hit it w/ the rolling chair while shifting because of my sore ass.
I grab the CD out and try to close the door. Nope. I try pushing it in gently. Nope. I try pulling it out or shifting from side to side. Nope. I make a couple of phone calls to check on the feasiblilty of an amateur repair. I'm told that I dealt a fatal blow to the drive and that I now have a handy cup holder on my computer.
Now I'm in the lovely situation of having to finish up the rolodex so that my 98 doesn't explode from multitasking. It also bites to go from a 20x to 10x and all the time that will take on the 40-ish CDs I have yet to go thru.
