Open Letter to Celebrities

Every few years Disney or whomever releases a movie with a domesticated animal(s) as the star. Each time this happens, humane societies go on a PR spree discouraging parents from buying the cool, movie-inspired pet for their kids. What was once a cute puppy is now a large, fumbling Dalmatian that gets shunted into the backyard or abandoned.

I now make this plea to all well intentioned celebrities out there...

Stop the adoption of your pet Africans and Asians!

I know your heart is in the right place. But will these children grow up honestly believing you love them? They may be grateful for being saved from the multitude of perils in their native country, but how much more likely will they see themselves as (pun not intended) as the black sheep of the family...or as a PR ploy?

Please, use your celebrity status to raise awareness and money to help these people. Work with organizations and governments to assist in improving the lives of these orphans. But to take a trip to Africa and return with a child like you would a souvenir, Madonna?

Stop it before the Jessica Simpsons and Paris Hiltons decide to follow in your footsteps to improve their public image.

Well, although I don't keep up a whole lot with celebrities, I think Madonna has a good heart and I'm sure she's a great Mom. I've seen her interviewed before, and I think she's much more mature than people think she is.

Hopefully the celebrities who would make lousy parents will refrain from adopting a child.
